If our body temperature is too high, it signals that we need to stay alert and awake. A drop in body temperature activates thermosensitive cells in the brain. They send a signal to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (that's kind of our 24-hour biological clock) for evening melatonin production and with it sleep. Thus, melatonin levels depend not only on the decrease in light in the evening but also on the decrease in temperature - these two factors are crucial to the process of falling asleep.
